Many women in Rajasthan are living in the most unbearable sections of their societies, uneducated with no skills these women are weak in a male dominated society.

In Jodhpur Govind has set up a project to empower women through providing education and economic opportunities.

He can use volunteers to help him get his goals. And of course DONATIONS.

Take a look at his website Sambahli

Take a look at Govind's blog too. There is a detailed report about the Sambhali project written by the German volunteer Johanna.

Sounds like a very good cause.

In a similar vein, I've been mightily impressed by 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking in Nepal who have similar aims.

This is their mission statement:

Quote

"Our aim has been, and continues to be, to empower and develop women through tourism and to encourage sustainable tourism in remote areas where there is little hope for the future.

"It is not easy to break down social barriers within a few years. Women trekking guides is a new concept for Nepalese society. It has been a great challenge to bring women into this industry, since society doesn't condone women working as guides, but after a long struggle we have proven ourselves. Women can also work as a guide if the opportunity is provided to her.  We have demonstrated that women are mentally, physically and emotionally as strong as men."

The past 2 weeks we've been in Jodhpur for a wonderful vacation (in spite of the weather; it was very hot!)
We could visit the Sambhali project and see the progress already made in the short time of existance.
The girls are happy and eager to learn and willing to take a long walk every day to reach school.

I can talk about it, but nobody can do it better than the volunteers who worked there.
