Help me understand this madness. Do thay have personalized/vanity plates in the UK like they do in the US? It only costs a  few dollars a year to get plates with to have any 6 or 7 letter combination  of letters and numbers of your choosing. How are plates issued in the UK?

In the UK, vehicle registration numbers are issued with new cars by the government.

The government keeps the best ones and auctions them.

If you have an old car, you may be lucky enough to own a good registration number and you can sell it.

If you want a good one, you have to buy it!

The registration lasts for the lifetime of the vehicle, and can be transferred to a different vehicle for a fee, payable to the government.

It is actually cheaper to legally change your name than it is to buy a personal registration.

I'm thinking of changing my name to RE51 WXX

This is madness!  And what's more astonishing is that there was more than one person willing to shell out this kind of money for the number!  :whistling:
