A student friend in Poland wants to receive money from India through an official channel. Anyone knows what is the best and fastest way to do it? Ofcourse there is an option of transfering money to another Indian expats account in India and him receiving local currency in hand. But he needs a proof of transfer.

Any suggestions based on your experience ?

Hi Sudheer

Thought you'd know this.  It can't be done, the only way you can do it is to physically draw it from an ATM in another country.  I believe India is the only country where you can only receive money through Western Union, you can't send it.  I also know that we couldn't transfer funds from our HSBC Indian acccount to our UK one.

Somebody will correct me if I am wrong I'm sure!

Thanks Malc..

Actualy, I still cant believe it... I just heard of it a while back and did some online research, for it is quite unbelievable.

I knew the Indian government was very possessive of the green/blue bucks, but to this extent ?

This is what my bank seems to offer: see This page here ---International Outward Remittances.

So it seems to be possible.

But it wouldn't surprise me in the least if there isn't a long list of Ifs and Buts, like maybe the sum needs to have come from abroad in the first place?

I wouldn't discount the banks without asking, though.

That sure is an issue, if you can prove it was paid in from another country then technically they can't stop you but you have to keep every possible receipt of transaction to prove this!  We realised before we left India that we had much more than we could possibly spend in our Indian account in our time remaining.  We managed to spend it though

thanks nick... thats a door opening for sure..

This kid's dad cannot really show its from inward remitted, but the fact that you are sending to a dependant son studying abroad should open some doors...

A student has hardly any problems sending money abroad, upto the limit of his fees and living expenses. I am talking from personal experience. I presume his family will be sending the money, so it is easier to state  that this is for covering the students expenses.

The bank will require some proof he is a student (in the case of the US, a I20 form is required, dunno about Poland) and some proof of education expenses in Poland. Some forms have to be filled.

In the case of the US, the I20 lists expected expenses, so it is easy to send upto that amount.

How to send? The fastest way is a bank transfer; in the US it reaches the same day.
The cheapest way is handcarrying a bank draft.

And no, there is no problem converting indian rupees to foreign exchange for this purpose.

Finally, you will need the Swift or Chasus numbers for the bank in Poland for the Indian bank to do this. These are just reference numbers for easy transfer since many banks are involved... for example, a US dollar transfer is routed through the USA, a pound transfer through UK, and so on. All banks are used to using this number

edit: no originals are required by the bank, even scanned copies of (eg I20 form) will do
