Hey guys, I don't know if you've been watching this years celebrity big brother, lame I know, but I have to watch it because the legendary shilpa is in it! I just wanted to know if anyone else thinks that she is being treated unfairly in the house. It has become uncomfortable to watch, housemates just don't get her, and viewers are just as bad. So, this has made me think that the British public are not ready or cannot accept a non-british housemate and dare I say it a non-white housemate for that fact. I know its a big fuss over nothing but I myself being British think the whole response to Shilpa has been blown way out of proportion. She's not a bitch, it's simply easier for housemates to target her and make her the object of ridicule! Phew! What do you think?

Its a load of nonsense. I hate to admit that I've watched a teeny bit of it when I have been thoroughly bored out of my wits and channel 4 at my place is the only watchable channel as we're in a dip.

There would be nothing said about it if she were say a brummy or a scouse and they were making up that accent but just because she is Indian everyone is calling the race card as usual.

We're becoming too damn sensitive about this sort of crap in this country IMHO.

I have to disagree, this morning I heard;

‘Is it India they eat with their hands?! I don’t want to eat her food, we don’t know where they’ve been!’

Not saying those imbeciles wouldn’t pick on another, white person, if they didn’t have her, they would, but it does feel a little racist to me.

Looking forward to getting away from such cr*p I have to say!

I think this is more than being "too damn sensitive", I think BB will show some insight in to how people react to this crowd/subject.
I dont watch BB but watched some of it because "hey there is an Indian on maintv",
I think what decisions BB take will be interesting...reported in media
“We have now had around 2,000 complaints,” said an Ofcom spokeswoman. “They are coming in a continuous stream.”
“If things continue at this level, by tomorrow this is likely to be the largest number of complaints ever received about a Big Brother series.”
But a Channel 4 spokesman insisted, “We take this matter very seriously and Big Brother does not tolerate bullying or racist abuse in any from.”
“Big Brother is closely monitoring the housemates and will take appropriate measures to reprimand such behaviour where necessary,” added the spokesman.

BB Rules: I wonder if they will change these... :)

At any stage, Big Brother reserves the right to change or adapt these rules without prior notice. Big Brother's decision is final.

Ask an Indian kid born in America who he is? American first then Indian
Ask an Indian kid born in UK who he is? Indian first and last.
Ask the same Indian kid born in UK and then visiting India- an Indian asks who he is? British
Confused? :)
Is this because the way in which we bring up our kids? or the State we live in?

Ignorance, ignorance, ignorance :) - These BB housemates have obviously never been out of their comfort zones. You'd think India is the only country where hands are used.
I feel really sorry for Shilpa. I saw a snippet this morning on Sky News and she looked really miserable.

Thumbs up for the Indians here in my country. Even if they were born here, they're Indian first and proud of it!!!

Seeing this is a celebrity BB, can someone tell me about the prize money. Will the winner donate this to a charity of their choice or is there a specific charity who will benefit?

I don't watch BB (load of rubbish imo) but this has been on the news and in the newspapers, apparently over 10,000 complaints have now been received so obviously most of Britain is not racist and this woman is just unfortunate enough to be stuck in a house with some of the more ignorant members of society (and it still annoys me that Jade Goody is deemed a 'celebrity' :P ).

Channel 4 has denied claims that Celebrity Big Brother contestant Shilpa Shetty has suffered racist bullying. :P
Culture clash! :P

Amid the row, Celebrity Big Brother drew its third-largest audience of the series on Tuesday evening.

The main highlights show averaged 4.5 million viewers, up from 3.5 million on Monday and 3.9 million on Tuesday last week.

Ok, maybe I was a little hasty in my earlier reply to this thread.

Jen just called out "Come and look at this" and I went in and watched half hour highlights of the most vile human being in Britain surrounded by two mates who are not much better tear into Shilpa with the most outrageous filth and language imaginable including several comments which could be construed as racist.

Our nation has made Jade Goody into a very rich influential celebrity and I have no f***ing idea why, she is a worthless common munter and I so hope that she has just destroyed her career (not that she actually does anything).

Her problem is primarily her ignorance followed closely by her education and upbringing with a bit of uncontrollable racism thrown in for good measure. She is completely outclassed by Shilpa on all levels, not difficult I guess, she is outclassed by my cat. She is of course extremely jealous and wants to bring Shilpa down to her level, that just aint happening and that winds her up even more!

It seems it has become a vendetta now and Jade just can't stop herself from hurling things like "you f***ing w***ker, go back to your slums little princess, you aint a f***ing princess in here"

After that stream of abuse Shilpa simply turned and said to Jade "What made you famous?, this house, I hope your proud". Perfect!

Shilpa is holding her own and with the kind words from Jermaine Jackson is resisting the temptation of slapping the little whore once and for all. I do have to wonder why the hell Shilpa agreed to do this programme, I personally have no idea who she is but I assume from what I've read that she is still very famous and yet everyone else on the show have failing careers and are trying to revive them

I'm certainly not proud to be English after watching that tonight and I do seriously hope that Jade lives near a heavily populated Indian community, I think that girl is in for some serious trouble when she comes out.

Finally I have to say, the world really should not be outraged by this and give a flying f*** what this idiot has said, this could so easily get out of control.

Hope thats summed a bit up for those of you who don't see the show, there would be war if this was on screens in India!

Cheers
Malc

Blair answered a question about the issue in the parliament today..

Last many hours, if you access CNN homepage the main news is big brother..

What Shilpa is facing in the house is pure filth, but the attention as well as news that it is generating is amazing. Given the fact that this has blown out so much, I think there is for sure some introspection and healthy dialogue that this is generating. Its not just a bunch of kids in Britain that this show is representing, I believe there is still a share of the society that lives in ivory towers with a fair share of ignorance, superiority complex and who knows a bit of inferiority coupled with Xenophobia... this is that strata of society which is a bit above the skinheads, but veiled with mannerisms, which are bought out in raw at times of such reality TV.

And NO I am not just talking about Britain or even western world, I am talking about this strata in every society. From America to Zambia, from the culturally poor to the resourcefully rich - shit exists. If this makes even a few of them to introspect and alter, it's been worth.

Malc.. as I am writing next to you, I am puttiing the above text in MS Word and doing a spell check before replying.. :P

Wow! I was thinking the same!
More people in India have access to TV and internet now and hence will generate lot more views on this, I remember growing up in India, having no access to media and seeing the first westerner in Bombay when I went to get visa, My view of the angrejis were formed by studying what was taught in history. In my village we thought that all white people were English! and seeing these westerners in Bombay for the first time, they looked very sophisticated a view that many Indian probably still have or had until this. Living in London for 30 years you see and experience a lot of this in everyday life, there are those that live in cuckoo land that want to go around denying that this happens in UK in 2007. Fact is it happens everywhere, just look at the caste system in India.
May be this is an extension to LOST- psychological experience? To see how different cultures interact in 2007. Am I giving this program too much credit?
Some one in the office said today, they should put Jade down, But I think cows are sacred in India :P
May be those calls centre Employees can learn/correct their english from this instead of forced to watch Eastenders!

Yes, it's true there's racism all over - but on a show that has millions of viewers, it seems to exacerbate an uncomfortable (for Shilpa) and totally unnecessary situation.

Oh, and by the way..... I used to hate Eastenders and now I can't get enough of it :D

Malkers,

I couldn't agree with you more. I tuned in last night to see what the furore was all about and ended up embarrased to be British. As a the gorgeous Ms Shetty put it herself "I am representing my country - if this is the modern UK - scary".

Unfortunately for her, she seems to have more than one piece of trash to contend with in that house of hell. The two (equally vacuous and pointless) slappers backing Ms Goody have as much reason to be ashamed.

I can't decide if it's racist or not. Certainly a few comments I heard last night were veering towards that. Basically I believe it started out as nothing more than insecure jelousy of a lady who's intelligence, success, beauty and manners are far beyond anything those stupid girls could ever aspire to for themselves. They are slipping into racism as nothing else has succeded in bringing Ms Shetty down to their gutter level. I am sure that their "careers" (such as they are) will suffer - good (or is that Goody?)

In 1893, a 24-year-old Indian lawyer arrived in Durban to take part in a lawsuit in Transvaal. He booked a first-class train ticket to Johannesburg – and was ordered out of the train because of his colour. He spent a cold night in the non–European waiting - room at Pietermaritzburg railway station.
guess who?

Do you need words alone to define if it is racism?

Channel 4 chief executive Andy Duncan said today there had been only two incidents of possible racial abuse on Celebrity Big Brother, and said he had no intention of pulling the plug on the controversial reality show.

Of course it's racist - if she was English, there's absolutely no way they would dare to treat her like that.

it's racist because it is based purely on her being of indian origin. if she wasn't (ie if she was white) then they wouldn't be able to say such things, they would be meaningless.

i haven't seen it, but i have certainly heard about it, even way down here on the under side of the world.

absolute trash the whole bb thing in my opinion.
just is.
