Hi
I have been to New Delhi before as part of a group and stayed in the Legend Inn which was nice and reasonably priced. I am planning a solo trip over my uni easter hols and the room is looking at being 25 pounds a night.
I have looked into youth hostels at 3 pounds a night - is this likely to be safe/reasonable? It seems a shame as a poor student going to work in the slums of Delhi for a week to spend 175 pounds on a hotel room when I could live in a hostel for 30 pounds and give the rest of the money to the charity Im going with.
Has anyone any opinions/suggestions of nice cheap places to stay for a nervous traveller?

I wouldn't recommend theYHA in Delhi i've heard some bad reports but for about £3 a day you could stay at Starview or Star Paradise in the Paharganj area or if you want to go slightly upmarket you could stay at www.hotelprincepolonia.com in the same area fo around £12 P/N. KK

Hi, I went to India for the first time last August, (travelled with a Buddhist Nun for some of my trip) I am going back in March on my OWN, Not bad considering my first trip away on my own was 2 years ago to Provence.
I am staying in Manju Ka Tilla, N Delhi, its the Tibetan Refugee Settlement I felt safe there, its only an auto rickshaw ride to get any where. I have stayed in himalayan house there is also Yak House, this time I'm staying in Wongdhen House as recommended by Guardian reads guide to Delhi ( 23.0906) price about 500r's a night.
I would suggest taking a little pillow, and towel maybe sleeping bag liner/sheet. Travel safely. best wishes
Susanj.
* I was reading the lonely planet guide the other night and scared myself half to death, but the tickets booked. I always the first night booked and a taxi to collect me from the airport. - cheap flight arrives at 11pm not so good in the cold light of day, maybe it would been better to of spent a bit more on the flight and arrived in daylight

Thanks for ur advice guys. once I get my exact placement sorted out I can really focus on hotels. my flight (when I book it) arrives in at 1.45 am and there is no other choice of flight from Dublin. at least it means I might sleep when I get in. Having found this board tho I am feeling a lot calmer about travelling on my own

I suggest the YWCA Blue Triangle Family Hostel. Here's the contact information:
YWCA Blue Triangle Family Hostel:
Ashoka Road,
Near Parliament Street.
Tel.: +91-11-3360133, 3361517, 3735138.
There's a brief description of it here - just scroll down till you get to it:
http://www.virtualto...Delhi-BR-1.html
And here's a more extensive review from another travel site:
"Last week I stayed at YWCA "Blue Triangle" family hostel -----which is very close by to the N/Delhi YMCA. The "Blue Triangle" is at ASHOKA ROAD near the landmark holy temple BANGLA SAIB GURUDWAR (I had a vindow view of it several floors above and their 24 hr prayer chantings). I was a single male traveller and they accommodated me --- I had a single room (A/C), Hot & Cold water showers, free newspaper delivered to my room at dawn daily, & free breakfast (Bread + toast + Jam + Bananas+omelette+Indian porridge with milk+warm Indian potatoe curry+tea OR coffee) and Cable/Sat TV with 95 channels including MTV, BBC World, CNN, German DW, French "TV Asie", and Japanese language NHK. REMEMBER TO GRAB BREAKFAST BEFORE 10:00 am (starts at 7:30 am).
Per day cost is Ind Rs.950/ ALL INCLUSIVE. They replenish towels and bed sheets daily. Just 10 mins to Connaught Place. In front of it is the bus stop to many spots including Delhi Railway Station. A cyber cafe/communication shop is located at the basement--they even arrange taxi pickups and various tours though you may save money touring on your own. I spent 5 nights there and found it's a safe place---even to leave your valuables in the room (provided you lock the cupboards of course). Most importantly, there are security guards at the gate and NO TOUTS!"
And on this site, http://www.jamyang.org/india.html , under the heading "Arrival in Delhi," there's a good description of what to do when you arrive in the middle of the night and your taxi driver insists that the place is closed and tries to take you to another hotel!
