I am a member of eoid and yes very little activity there now. Last winter we did visit Afghan eateries and other places in Old Delhi.
One very nice hang out called DV8 has closed down and a sports bar has come up there. A must avoid place.
Delhites have now started trying new cusines from all over the world and have grown out of the butter chicken  palak paneer circuit. Sushi is the current craze. I stay away from friends who are Sushi addicts.... thery smell  :giggle:
The lunch buffet served at Oh Calcutta is simply excellent and damn good value for money. For about Rs.450 you can feast on 3 types of fish and crab dishes and 2 types of meat, variety of vegetarian dishes, dals plus veg pulao, steamed rice and atleast 2 types of desserts.

Huge multistoried shopping malls have mushroomed all over Delhi and all have food courts where young Delhi crowd goes to eat.

As you head towards Nizamuddin from Lodhi Road in Delhi just after the flyover' on the right is a small eatery called "Ap ki khatir" meaning service for you. As u park & roll down the windows two things meet you. The aroma of Kababs drifting out of the shop & a smiling young lad who speaks English too. You then place your order. Depending on the weather you can either go out & sit on the bench or wait in the car. Be careful when you eat your Galauti Kabab... it is so soft!!! Move on to Sheek Kababs & the finale with Kakori Kababs. Kakori last because of its strong aroma.
You enter another great foodie area as you leave this joint & move on.. turn right. That will be another story.

Jyoti, are they still making Galauti kebabs on the street or have the authorites put a stop to it?? I'd love to re-visit the place you took me with Shilpa......in fact my mouth's watering while i type! :giggle: KK

Not really a restaurant, but you can't beat the Jalebi Walla on Chandni Chowk - Even better than my late great grandmother's homemade, which is saying something! Helpfully, I'm not 100% sure where it is...it's on the corner of one of the little alleyways on the south side of the street, I think it might be a little bit west of where McDonalds is. Helpful, eh?

any new, up and coming places that are worth a visit?
Dilli Dastarkhwan in the Islamic Centre on Lodhi Road is strongly recommended...

And since there seems to be some confusion about the existence of Kairaliyam, yes it's very much there in the Munirka market - a couple of shops away from the Capital Court building.

Talking about EOiD, the blog might not have been updated, however the community is very active on Orkut and I am a regular poster there...

And AlanD has just committed a sin by saying that Sita Ram Diwan Chand is a 'lesser' known food joint in Delhi. It might be lesser known to tourists, and netizens, but go and check the place yourself and then let me know if all those restaurants you read about are lesser known or  Sita Ram Diwan Chand. Cholle bhature  is something that Delhiites love. And all worthy cholle Bhature wallas are almost done with their daily supply at around 2 pm itself..and interent knows very little about them...

I am yet to come across Chhole Kulche on web, its a sinful Rs.5-10 wonder, amongst the healthiest things you can eat in India and yes they can be addictive..and millions of faceless Delhiites or rather Indians, depend on it for their daily lunch.

Sheessh I'm happy with Shshank's food court quite delicious mutton momos. With Feni, cheers pal.

Shashank Alan's an old old hand in traveling India, I'm sure he meant lesser known to newbies like me.

This made me think, along the way I've been to a few places like street stalls, food courts, chain Biryani places and canteens. I've a feeling that Delhi is full of these places, cheap, filling and very tasty, Vinay always had the low down on these in years gone by, but Jyoti and Shashank seem well placed to advise on all the little snacks you won't get in mainstream restaurants, good kebabs, Faloodas, Kulchas wouldn't it be wonderful to have these on a google map of Delhi.

Hmmm maybe I can get together, though I'm do great hand  on google maps, I'll need to learn how  to make place marks.
Anyone else good with google maps software?

Old hand or not, a SIN is a SIN...

The only way to wash it off would be to get us Delhiites something with which we can wash our dinner down... :giggle:

We are all sinners Shashank and how come the venerable member of EOiD couldn't even find his way there and most of the members had never been there before if it is so well known to Delhi foodies? I don't claim to be an authority on eating out in Delhi but I'm interested in getting off the beaten track of Karim's and Chor Bizarre etc and trying out places that don't get a mention in guidebooks or travel websites - please give me some credit for that!

If I find this place and eat there, asking passers by on the way, will my sin be forgiven?

EDIT I'm quite surprised your group managed to make it into Paharganj as I've found over the years that most middle class Indians think the place is a den of iniquity.

Karim's forever...but leaving that aside....
Do try the Mysore masala dosa of Shankar's (off Jantar Mantar)....his is the best and I'm talking of the dosa per se and not the accompaniments like chutney and sambar (which are sh*t there).

Gulab jamuns and samosas of Malik's (in the alley next to the Bank of Baroda building in Janpath).

Chache ke Chole Bhature in K. Nags...as also the root beer close by (forgetting the name of the place). Also the chole bhature and gol guppas of Odeon.

Mutton curry in Rajinder da dhaba near Kamal cinema (if you can handle the spices).

Chicken Changezi in...damn ! I have forgotten again ! (sorry - too many drinks down right now). If you can have that for dinner and still have breakfast and lunch the next day, I shall kiss your feet.

And so on and so forth....

Actually, mattar kulche more commonly...easily recognisable on the streets - guy with a cart on the roads with the shiny gold elliptical vessel being the identity.

The best food you'll find in the surrounds of Delhi can't be told by the passers by...that's because, it's dished out by my wife....saag meat, butter chicken, vegetable bomb, shahi paneer, dil-e-firdaus blah blah blah....now if cyber gives you a glowing reference, you may just get to savour these  :giggle:....and then, your sin in having missed out on this in all these years of India travels shall be forgiven !

I guess we can manage that  :giggle: , also try the Kashmeeri Naan shop, once you exit the lane of imperial cinema on the opposite end of main bazaar, its on that road itself. Ask anyone, or spot the crowds....

After a forray in to Palika Bazar or Janpath have a sandwitch & cold coffee at D Paul's.
Yes bhai kabaary the biriyani served at Dilli Dastarkhwan in the Islamic Centre is very good.
The fish fry served at Rajinder Dhaba is excellent on a winter evening and for those who are interested there is a liquor shop very close to it.
And Ria, very close to your jelebiwalla is another road side vendor dishing out excellent halwa and if you move a little further there is the outlet of Annapurna selling the best Bengali sweets in Delhi. Try their green peas samosa in winter, the sweet curd sold in earthenware pots are excellent.

In that case, I'll stand you a beer in a reasonably priced establishment of your choice. The others will have to wait until I upset them!

Thanks for the naan shop recommendation. Don't know what I can offer you in exchange - The Khosla café, just a little way back towards New Delhi station from the Metropolis, where you can have have an exotic dish of fried eggs, chips and baked beans? Nah!, probably not! How about Bengali peppered potatoes down at the junction, beside the veg market, in the evening. There are usually a few sellers there - used to be 5 rupees a shot last time I was there.

I'll still be making my visit(s) to Karim's - just want to get around a bit more on this visit. The suggestions keep rolling in, thanks KABARRY, and I think I'm going to have quite a little file of info for our visit this winter. We'll be in and out of Delhi a few times during the five month period we are in India and Nepal - the problem is that we can only eat three times a day at most.

I'm sure cyberhippie will give me a glowing reference, I've made sure of that ;)  - I just wonder if your wife knows that, in a slightly inebriated state, you have nearly (yes I have noticed the qualifying "just may" words, you obviously weren't totally pissed) offered her culinary services to two complete strangers.

The only reasonably priced establishment these days is my car  -_-,  though a bit cramped for the first timers, it doubles up as an excellent lounge when parked somewhere in seclusion and is known for belting out Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahet Fateh Ali Khan OR Kailash Kher..
