1.Karims hotel near Jama Masjid for excellent non-vegetarian Mughlai food. Start with Mutton Barha, move on to Seekh Kababs with Rumali roti, Mutton Quorma with Bakarkhani Roti, Mutton Ishtew with Tandoori roti, finish with Sheermal as the dessert.
2.Chor Bizzare near Delhi gate for excellent Kashmiri cuisine. The salad bar is the Rolls Royce vintage car. Start with a beer with batter fried Lotus stems, more beer with Tabak Maj, Gustaba with rice, Rista with yellow pulao. For dessert walk towards Dariya Gunge & near the movie theatre you will find good Kulfi Faluda.
3.Take a bus from C.P which goes towards Mehrauli. Get down at the I.N.A market & cross the road & you will find Delhi Hat. The food court has stalls from all the states so you can gorge on all the goodies.
4. Continue on the same bus & get down at the Green Park stoppage. Get in to the Indian Oil Corporation compound. Here you will find a very homely restaurant serving Kerala cuisine. Try the Karee Meen a typical back-water fish from Kerala spiced & crisp fried. Have Mutton/Chicken stew with Appams. For dessert cross the road & go to Green Park Extn. Market. Head to Ever Green Sweet House & try the delicious sweets & great Lassi.
5.The Nathu’s sweet house in Bengali market near Mandi house serves very good snacks, sweets & vegetarian food. Try the Kulcha Chole, Raj Katchori & Ras Malai.
6.For the best vegetarian meal head for the ISKCON temple near East of Kailash, have a thali here.
7.Visit Swagath in Defence Colony for seafood cooked in south Indian style. The Crabs are great & also try Chettinad cuisine here.
8. Lazzeez Durbur. Next to Rajdoot hotel. The Gola kababs, biriyani & rezzala are excellent.
9. Kake da Hotel. At CP. Try Chicken curry, lamb brain curry, Shag Meat with hot fresh tandoori rotis.
10. For real authentic Chinese food visit Chinese at inner circle CP opposite to Competent motors. Bird’s nest soup & Beizing Duck are very good.
11. The best Italian food outside the 5 starred ones(well I have my doubts at times) is to be had at Diva at M Block G.K-II. Ritu who owns & runs this place is a wonderful person. She is so good that she serves truffles & Italian wines at almost no mark ups. Her wine cellar is wonderful. What ever you eat here will be memorable.
12. For seafood head to Ploof at Lodhi road. Fresh sea food cooked in a variety of styles, Indian, Continental & far eastern.

I am not sure if the Vikram Hotel paranthe waala is stillserving them hot and spicy..he was a cult!
Of the rest, Indian Oil paranthe waala (sic!) is still around, though he has moved to the other side of the street. Paranthas outside IIT are and will always be a rage.

Ah
the UPSC chaat-wala. Love his wares, but my association with him is for reasons I care not to remember (a terrible afternoon waiting my turn to be interviewed for the UPSC).
I like Chor Bizarre because outside of the home of a Kashmiri, it's the best place for Kashmiri food.
There used to this nice place in NOIDA's Sector 18 market for Bengali food aficionados called Howrah Junction. Loved their singaras, khichudi, dim bhaja & steamed ilish. For Bong food, I also liked Chowringhee (Patparganj - too far out for most of you, I guess) - wonder if it's still around. And of course Baboo Moshai in CR Park.
I bet some of you are going to diss this reco, but I like the Indian version of burgers & rolls that Chona's! Their new decor's very faux European café, but the grub's tasty & the service quick.

Pleased by life's gauds, pained by its pinpricks and stings,
Swayed by ignoble hopes, ignoble fears;
Threading life's tangled maze without life's clue,
Busy with means, yet heedless of their ends.....

This is an interesting topic.
Could someone please post here a few names of restaurants in Delhi which serves the best North Indian, or Mughlai cuisine (but only veg please). We are vegetarians and prefer to avoid going to both Veg & Non-Veg restaurants.
Thanks.

With due respect, Mughlai veg is a contradiction in terms. Imo, it's highly unlikely that you'll find a restaurant that serves Mughlai and is also pure vegetarian.
for northie pure veg places, here's my list:
- Natthoo's, Bengali Market.
- Bengal Sweets Centre, Karol Bagh
- Vega Restaurant (Hotel Alka) CP,
- Veg Gulati, Pandara Road.

I second that!!!
Close by Haldirams does some pretty tasty snacks and sweets, the Katchori and Aloo tikkis were both good!!
On Paharganj there's the Maholtra and on Janpath I really recommend Sarowar Bhavan simply devie South Indian food, you'll probably have to que to get in but it's worth it!
Thalis for 80 rupees are wondeful!! complet with sweets and icecream!!
A real fav of mine is opposte the Metropole it's a kind of workers canteen but the Nepali cook sure serves up some great Channa masala, Rajma etc and it's very cheap. The look might put a lot of people off but I've never got sick there and where elese do you still get a roti for 1 rupee or an aloo parotha for 8!!
Try the Kheer great at 20 rupees a bash!

One could also try the Andhra Bhawan canteen near India Gate. Their lunch and dinner thalis are a sellout..very economical and lots to eat...fantastic value for money!

Another vote for Andhra Bhavan
A P Bhawan Canteen
A P Bhawan
1, Ashoka Road
New Delhi - 100 001
Phones: (011) 23382031, 23889182
Caveat(s):
If you arrive at or after 1.00 p.m. you may have to wait for as much as 30 minutes!
Carry lots of tissue paper & be prepared to consume lots of water - Andhra food is f.i.e.r.y.
This is not your place if you're into fine dining.
Prices from memory:
Andhra meal= Rs. 50 (unlimited rice & rotis, dal, two dry vegetables (mostly fried potato/ beans/ coconut and cabbage/ bottle gourd), sambhar, rasam, chutneys, curd, pickles, gunpowder chutney & a sweet dish).
Chicken fry= Rs. 50
Chicken Biryani= Rs 75 9(Sundays only)

My favourite for a quick meal has to be Nizam's Kathi Kebabs at the Plaza Cinema building in Connaught Place.

I used to go to the UNI canteen a lot as a student. They used to serve seriously south Indian grub & it was fantastically cheap - a thaali for Rs. 10, wada/sambar, idli/sambar, dosa/sambar for Rs. 5, and a vast range of snacks.
Wonder if it still exists: could a Delhiite please confirm?

There's a lovely joint outside Old Delhi railway station which serves delicious snacks and sweet. It also stocks Haldiram products and imported chocolates. I believe it has a couple of branches in the city too. Does anyone remember the name ?
