Most "pharmacies" in India are merely drug shops.
They sell drugs, but know nothing about them.
The chances are that your medicines will be available in India for 10% of the price you pay at home.
However, most medicines are produced by different manufacturers under different names.
You need to know the generic name of your particular medicine, then the shopkeeper can look it up in his or her big book and let you have have it.
All drugs and medicines are marked by law with a Maximum Retail Price, i.e. MRP Rs.2.5
You can buy "prescription only" drugs at most drug shops without a prescription. If you want a prescription, you can get one from a qualified doctor for a few rupees.

you can ask the 'pharmacist' to prescribe you one...he will be happy to oblige
.
you can also reuse your last prescription!..just take the old prescription and tell the pharmcist you are currently facing the same problems and would like the same pills!
ask the doctor for some free medicine (if you cant afford)..he will give some from the samples that sales guys from the medicine companies have left with him...
medicine that need to be taken in courses [for scientific/medical reasons] like antibiotics for a week can be taken for a couple of days..the pharmacist will say..take it for two days and see if you are allright!~
there are many dispensaries [clinics] that you have to be careful..they will give more than it is necessary like vitamins, iron tablets or the extra x-ray...why..hey more sales~ the doctor gets a commission from the pharmcists or the companies!
since there is wide disparity/diversity of patients that visit small clinics, some doctors with inhouse drug cabinets will prescribe colorful pills that have no markings! please do ask the doctors for the names/purpose of these drugs if you care!~
