I have been using yahoo messenger to call India for the last few months and I have to say the quality is very impressive.

And today they are having free calling to India for upto a maximum of 60 mins per call :D Feel free to splurge if you have an account!

http://voice.yahoo.com/diwali

So anyone who thinks $ 0.099 is cheap for calling to India, sign up for this service and you can enjoy occassional boons like today where it is 100% free to any phone in India.

But dont bother signing in for today's offer as it takes a few days to get approved B)

Thanks heaps Sudheer.

I just signed up and it took only about 30 mins to start working. 2 calls to Rishikesh for free and 45 cents to ring Jarrad in Sydney with poorer voice quality!!!!

If you have friends in US, you can call them at 1 cent per minute, which is a great bargain as well with good voice quality :D

I think Skype is the best voice quality. Don't know how the prices compare, but my calls from India to UK cost just a few pennies.

Hi Nick, I thought Skype was only PC-PC. Has this now changed to include PC to phone?

All providers give pc to pc free, but pc to phone is a paid service. Of the reputable ones, from my research yahoo was the cheapest and quality to India is great..

Ofcourse except today, because half the planet is using the free option and server is acting out.. But tommorrow as well they are in 50% of the usual rate - which is 4.9 cents (US) per min.

As for rates Skype is 15 euro cents per min.

Word 'on the [techie] street' is that Skype, having been developed for speech, rather than being tacked on to a text chat etc system, does that best.

I've only used Skype, I can't compare. But for ease of installation, lack of interfering with other programs or screwing up windows, etc etc it is good (not saying anything else is bad...).

Skype gives free PC to PC, as has been mentioned, pre-paid calls to phones, and also SkypeIn, which is paying to have a telephone number ---several countries are available--- that people can call, paying the local/national rate for their call, and the call is routed to Skype on your PC. You can also have voice mailbox.

I pay GBP0.012 for calls to UK from India. Don't know, but that's probably the .19 euro cents equivalent.  There may be cheaper, but  just-about one penny per minute is not going to send me scurrying to check out the competition!

You all are lucky guys.

We have pleasure in living in a country like Dubai, where Etisalat is the only one service provider and who maintains monopoly and they have very kindly recently banned all VoIP sites.  Here is what I get when I click on the link which Sudheer has provided.

That's about three times the cost of Skype, about the same as an iWay internet café, and not that much cheaper than picking up the landline phone!

Mercurie... Bummer :D
