My budget's meant to be Rs. 800 a day and I usually manage to stick to it when I'm staying put in one place. When I'm on the move I tend to go over-budget a bit (Rs. 1000 a day or so, I'd imagine).

Beer's the thing that destroys my budget - when a beer costs the same amount as a meal it's easy to spend too much if you like a couple of pints in the evening.

Puhh, good question.
I travel predominantly alone.
The rooms which I rent seldom cost more than 400 rupees.
However, they almost always have 2 beds.
I must choose the category 3 almost only for this reason.

How much money you need for one day, depends on in what kind of hotel you want to stay.
Eating is not very expensiv here, but a good hotel could be expensiv.
I think round about 2000 rupies is normal, if you want to have some comfort.
It also depends on the time you want to travel to India, when you come in dezember or
january, everything costs a lot more than in the time before or after.

My self i normally budget any thing from 15000 up to around 2000 a day, my room can cost anything from 100 rps up to a max of 600 rps again as others have already stated i do enjoy a few beers in the evening along with a few G&T's so that frequently put me in the 2000 Rps a day bracket  :D
