If you already have a license in another country then you are already half legal then you make yourself fully legal by popping a few bucks in a cop's top pocket if you get pulled  :)

If you don't already hold a foreign driving license then I can't think why on earth you would want to take a test in India?

Have seen this discussed before and the general consensus is that it is much more trouble than its worth.

I have driven many times here without a hitch and cops don't tend to pull foreigners over anyhow.

It's not right, it's not clever but it's India!  :)
Smoked for 25 years but now not smoked since 13th Jan. Am I now a non smoker, a smoker who doesn't smoke or an ex smoker? Do I have to even have a title, can I not just be a 'me'? Has not smoking made me crazy?, probably!

Wouldnt advise malkers route.

If you have a major accident or something, you will face a lot of legal and insurance problems without a proper licence. and a couple of bucks in a cop's pocket wont work.

Don't know the details or the rules for foreigners, but an international driving licence is valid for sometime in India. I would suggest, instead of paying the cops, pay a "driving school" (euphemism for people who, besides kind of teaching you driving, assist in getting a driving a licence for you).. you dont have to go for any driving test, and you will have a legal valid licence.

Thanks for the replies.
The reason I ask is.....I decided to travel to India about 6 months ago and with living in Ireland the waiting list for a driving test can be anything up to 18 months, along with some ridiculous charges for pre-tests and paperwork etc.

Someone put it in my head that I could inexpensively sit the test in India, exchange the licence for an interntional one and have a valid car licence for the rest of my travels which includes OZ and New Zealand.

I aready hold a full bike licence and hold the controvercialn Irish provisional car licence which allows you to drive without ever having a driving lesson... dont ask!

Won't ask because many in India hold that kind of license without any controversy :)
