‘Baishey Sravan’ when translated in Bengali means the twenty second day of the month of Sravan. This was the day (7th August 1941) the poet laureate of India Rabindra Nath Tagore passed away to his heavenly abode. Born on 7th May 1861, he received the Nobel Prize in 1913. He had inborn talent for observing his surroundings and describing in either poetry or prose – both were equally delightful. The influence of Tagore can be seen in every phase of our lives – in fact, there is no Bengali who has not thought or discussed or written about Rabindra Nath Tagore. He surfaces in our love letters, in the titles of films, in our speech. The Shantiniketan, or the Abode of Peace was an University that he set up to train the youth in various disciplines, especially in the fine arts. It is a living legacy to his foresight. The greatest tribute that the world has paid to him is that two of his poems viz. ‘Jana-gana-mana’ and ‘aamar sonar Bangla’ have been chosen as the National Anthems of two countries – India and Bangladesh respectively.

Yes Sadhuji, Rabindranath influenced us in an overwhelming way. Like the rays of Sun he had illuminated our lives & still does. On Baishye Shravan he left us but his works will stay alive for ever.

Farewell

I have got my leave. Bid me farewell, my brothers!
I bow to you all and take my departure

Here I give back the keys of my door
--- and I give up all claims to my house.
I only ask for last kind words from you.

We were neighbours for long,
But I received more than I could give.
And now the day has dawned
And the lamp that lit my dark corner is out.
A summons has come and I am ready for my journey.

--- Rabindranath Thakur
