Ok, the Indian Airlines website has a dropdown list of destinations, including Jaisalmer, but when I used it to look up flights Delhi-Jaisalmer, it said there are none, ever.

So I Google and several sites say that Jaisalmer airport only opens in peak season, between Sept and March. So I assume that although I am searching for a December flight, Indian Airlines schedule checker just isn't bright enough to work that out. Until I have a look at their Network map. Jaisalmer isn't on there at all; it's as if they don't fly there. In which case why is it an option in the schedule checker? (The same applies to Dharamsala!)

Confused, I have a look at this Jetnav thing that's supposed to track all air routes. It doesn't even have Jaisalmer as a potential destination. It's just not listed.

So I am still confused. Can any one help with the following questions:

Does Jaisalmer have a commercial airport? If so, who flies there and from where? Is it true that it only opens for commercial flights in the winter, and if so, when's the earliest I could book a seat?

Many thanks!

Dear Karuna,

THe airport at jaisalmer is a air force airport not available for civillian/ commercial flights. This is what I know from my visit to jaisalmer last year.

Its best to fly to jodhpur and then take the road / Train to jaisalmer.

Regards
mani

Yes either take the train from Delhi or fly to Jodhpur & take the overnight train to Jaisalmer. You can also take an overnight train from Delhi to Jodhpur, visit Jodhpur whole day & take the night train to Jaisalmer.

We took the bus from Jodpur that left at 8:00 and it arrived in Jaisalmer in the early afternoon.  We were relatively comforatable and found the time better for us than the early or late night train.

The airport in Jaisalmer used to have seasonal flights. I once booked an October, 2001 Delhi-Jaisalmer flight via Indian Airlines. Then September 11th happened and all flights were canceled, my money was refunded. As far as I know that was the last time flights were ever scheduled for Jaisalmer.

Probably was never a real money maker so they didn't bother to reinstate the route.
