A friend had lunch in a restaurant on Calangute beach on a recent Goan holiday, silly man, didn't question the fact that the prices were missing on the menu.

At the end of a simple lunch of dal and rice, was charged Rs.500/-. Beware!

moral of the story: ask for a menu first!

THis thing first started with some top of the top restaurants whose clientele do not bother about money. Then some one got a better idea...

...how odd it is that, to some people, getting ripped off has some sort of snob value!!!

For them it is not ripping.... the bill is a minor thing non-consequential....

I guess I'm a previous offender! In my foolish youth I used to judge a restaurant partly on how expensive it was --- especially if I could persuade some-one else to pay!

I don't think it is not caring about the cost. In that case, one just ignores the figures.

It is being ostentatious about not caring about the cost.

The difference is that the posh restaurants that do not show the price will charge a fixed amount - they do not make up a price and charge foreign-looking or wealthy-looking people more.

This is the practice that I fnd distasteful.

I had a friend in the UK who sold conservatories.  The "price" of the conservatory depended on what he thought he could get out of the customer.  If they had a big house, or expensive car the "price" would be double.  If their big house was in an expensive area, the "price" would treble.  He only worked there for a week and still feels guilty that he ever took the job.

Almost everything sold in the UK has a price marked on it so this type of rip-off doesn't often take place.

India has a different marketplace where, for instance, classified newspaper advertisements for pre-owned cars never show the price asked, whereas in the UK they always show the price!

Like the OP said, always ask the price before you buy, and this rule applies to anywhere in the world!

No need to feel guilty about selling conservatories! Very nice things!

If the way he fixed his prices was his choice, then maybe he should feel bad about that.

Or maybe he should figure he gave a discount to his poorer customers!!!

Rs 500 for daal and rice is ridiculous. I think I'd refuse to pay if someone had the nerve to charge me that.

But, like others have said, it doesn't take a minute to ask 'kitna?' first.

I'm not sure whether it's still customary, but when going to up-market restaurants, the lady receives the menu without the prices being shown???

At Many small restaurants here ("hotels") a guy will come and tell you what you can have (usually after telling that what you asked for is unavailable!) .

Wouldn't dream of demanding to know how much their masala dosa or puri, etc, etc is before ordering. It is going to be about the same price as the other places around, maybe a few ruppees more if it is a bit posh place.

I guess you only need to be wary when buying from people who are aiming fleecing tourists :)
