Patal Bhubaneshwar is located at 14 kms to the north of Gangolihat and 91 kms. from Pithoragarh at an elevation of about 1400 mts.
Gangolihat is famous for an ancient Temple of Goddess Kali. Hatkalika Temple was established by Sankaracharya as a Mahakali Shakti Peeth near Bhubneshwar village in Tehsil Didihat, at a distance of 14 km from the beautiful underground caves of Patal Bhubaneshwar, the sub-terranean shrine of Lord Shiva is situated with sprawling interiors. Limestone rock formations have created various spectacular stalactite and stalagmite figures. The guides will explain these shapes comparing them with mythological & religeous figures. The entry is through a narrow tunnel like opening which leads to a number of caves. The guides seem to be in a hurry. We offered them some more money & they slowed down.
Patal Bhubaneshwar can be visited as a day excursion from Chaukhori.
Chaukori is a small Kumaoni Village, has tea gardens with enchanting views of the Himalayas. This is the only place where tea is grown in these parts of Himalaya. The tea has a subtle flavour with a strong body. The road to Chaukori is along the famous Berinag ridge. The vista of the Greater Himalayan range- Trishul , Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot is fabulously wide and close here. There is a tourist bungalow here & a stay here is highly recommended. Try to catch the sun rise here.
I had visited this places quite some long time back so I expect more staying options to be available. Some one who has visited these parts can give more up to date info.
