Hello there!
I'm trying to book a train on late july in order to get down to karwar (and then to gokarna) and the most convenient timetables I can see is about one train which is not leaving from Mumbai itself rather than from Vasai Road. The question is
how easy is to arrive to Vasai Road train station?
Just 9 seats left on that train so I must do a quick decision or I'll lose that seats! thanks!

There are commuter trains from Churchgate going out to Vasai road. Try getting a train from Mumbai to Gokarna road, not all trains stop there but some do.

Vasai Road is a suburban station on the western railway in Mumbai
Trains leave for Vasai road from Churhgate every 20 mins and the journey will be 1 hr and 10 min. I do it everyday to get to work. will cost you approx 20 Rs. single travel fare ( IInd Class)
Send me more details on your train timings, luguage that you will be carrying and where will you be staying in Mumbai.
Will then post suitable local train timmings which will get you well in time for your train to gokarna.
Best of luck.
Mani

If you are travelling from abroad to India, I would suggest you better hire a vehicle to go to Vasai, as you will have luggage etc. and its really hard to go by local trains to Vasai. The trains, generally, at all times over-crowded and it will be very difficult to travel in such train with luggage.
I have a relative of mine living in Virar (a couple of stations down after Vasai - last station for suburban local trains), and only once I travelled by local train with lots of difficulties and after that I always hired a vehicle, whenever I went there.
The vehicle should cost you around Rs.1,000 or so.

Well yes the trains to Vasai are crowded more so in the evening when the Office crowd from south Mumbai is travelling back home. At that time it is not advisable to travel by locla train anywhere.
but in the Off peak hrs in the morning upto about 3 PM the trains are OK. But then I travel in the OFF peak hrs everyday.

Thanks for your answers!
Anders: I've checked for trains going to gokarna road but timetables leave me there aroñund 2 am. not a nice hour to get down in a little unknown (for me) town. But thanks for your suggestion.
Mani and Mercure: yes I was worried about catching a suburban train with luggage and I think I should look for another train down to Karnataka… That train is leaving Vasai Road one monday around eight p.m. (and arrives to karwar in the morning) so I understand that I'll have to arrive there with my luggage inside an overcrowded coach for more than one hour, if mumbaiites advice me not to take the local train on that rush hours better to trust them!
so I'll look for other options, thanks to all.

There are two trains direct from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus [North Central Mumbai] to Karwar, both reach around 1:00 AM as you have already noticed.
Try this: Take Train No. 0103 Madgaon Exp leaving Mumbai CST at 06:55 reaching Madgaon [Goa] at 18:40. If you really DON'T want to see Goa, there are many buses which will take you to Karwar [or even direct to Gokarna] within one to one & a half hours.
If you want to see Goa, stay there for a day and then proceed ahead.

Thanks AvidTrekker!
I've already been in Goa some years ago and in winter
and this time I came to India only for one month so I'll go straight to Gokarna as I have never been there and seems that soon mass tourism is going to hit this area so I'll skip Goa.
As you say that there are lots of buses to Gokarna I think I'm going to take an overnight train (saves money and time) from Mumbai to Madgaon and jump into a bus to gokarna after a lunch at Longuinho's in Madgaon (I don't remember where I've seen it recommended).
Only one and a half hours in a bus is very easy to handle, actually I was expecting a rough bus journey from Madgaon to Gokarna but only this frame time change my point of view and I'm less lazy to not take that other train leaving from Vasai Road straight to Karwar...
thanks guys for the info!!!

The night train 0111 Konkan Kanya Exp starts 23:00 reaches Madgaon 12:30.
Catch a bus going to Kumta or beyond Kumta. Get off at Madangeri on thw way. Take some local transport for the balance 15 km to Gokarna. You should be at Gokarna before 16:00... well within daytime.
