Hi,

Would I have trouble travelling by train on or around Christmas and New Year? What about finding guesthouses and hotels at that time? We're planning to go to Orchha for New Year but I'm a bit concerned that everywhere will be shut!

I spent New Year's Eve of 2003 on a train from Bhubaneshwar to Delhi (the Shatabdi) and it was only half full. Everybody was very friendly and Delhi was very quiet when I arrived on New Year's Day.

You might consider making reservations somewhat in advance for the holiday period if you are afraid you won't be able to find a place. I made the train reservation more than a week before my intended date -- that's a "long time" for me, as I usually give myself two or three days for a reservation
