World Cup opener in NYC

Today New York City watched South Africa and Mexico kick off the first World Cup held in Africa. I spent the first half at Madiba, a great South African restaurant in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene, and the second at the Haab Mexican cafĂ© in Queens’ Sunnyside to see how locals were celebrating (the chilaquile with green sauce was truly fantastic). Things were a notably tenser in Queens before Mexico got the late goal to tie 1-1.
