Jaundice

Posted by , 26 September 2007 · 40 views

Jaundice is known by many words like piliya, Kamini, Kamuni, Kawil. It is due to circulating yellow coloured pigment in the blood. There are varied causes for circulation of this pigment ( Bilirubin).  Some of these causes are hereditary( Criggler Najjar) , some are caused by infection ( Hepatitis) , some are because of Gall stones or even cancer. Hence treatment for Jaundice differs from person to person. Many infective causes are self limiting. Treatment or no treatment that self limiting Jaundice disappears over a period of time. Jaundice due to Stones and Cancer needs specific surgical treatment. Jaundice can be a symptom of a lifethreatenining fulminant hepatitis as well.
To differentiate between various sets of Jaundice Investigations are done. USG- Ultrasound examination and Liver function test gives fair conclusion about the cause of the disease. EUS/ ERCP/ CT abdomen may be needed in some cases.
Treatment of Obstructive jaundice is surgical. Clotting of blood is always assessed before any invasive procedure is done
