Diabetes Mellitus And Surgery

Posted by , 26 September 2007 · 40 views

It is a common feeling amongst all of us that if we have infamous diabetes mellitus we will be the first person to know about it. Unfortunately this conviction is totally wrong. Though few symptoms like Polyphagia( increased Hunger), Polydipsia ( Increased thirst) and Polyuria( increased frequency of urination) described as commonly present in this disease , the disease is missed more than noticed by the patient himself. Hence it is nearly mandatory  to check blood sugar levels before any invasive procedure. High blood sugars can be life threatening like in Diabetes Ketoacidosis. High blood sugars are good medium for harbouring and spreading infection. High Sugars over longer time duration affect Small vessles like those present in eyes, Kidneys, Feet. It can cause damage to few nerves called Autonomic nerves. This can hide Heart attack--meaning patient will not get chest pain even if he gets heart attack. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause Delayed wound healing and septic complications
