I am a regular visitor to Nepal and keep an eye on what's happening there on GoogleNews. and www.blog.com.np.
I would say it is safe to go there at the present time. The Maoists have declared a ceasefire and the RNA seem to have backed off. For the moment the SPA (Seven Party Alliance) is tentatively in control whilst awaiting the formation either of an Interim government or democratic elections.

It really depends where you want to go. I personally would be happy to visit the Annapurna area, Langtang, Everest region, Chitwan but not very eager to go far west to Bardia. Stick to well-frequented tourist enclaves. Kathmandu seems to be safe. Stay away from demonstrations - this is commonsense advice.

Where are you thinking of visiting?

I am going there on the 22nd(woohoo!) :) and I have heard from people currently there it is as safe as ever for travelers, at least in the Kathmandu Valley, which is where my friend and I will be mostly staying. It's good to have a look at the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum thread on the current situation, also go to http://www.ekantipur.com, the Nepali news site.
