Love Goan curries although I'm a bit concerned about the Russian influence creeping in now - why the hell is there so a love affair with Russia in India now? Went to Goa at Christmas and many of the restaurant menus were entirely in Russian and it detracts from the meal when the other customers are so pi***d that they keep dropping the bottle of Vodka the've hidden under the table! LOLcool.png

You are not going to like what you hear :)

The russians are there in Goa for the same reason the Brits are there, or the israeli are there....

Don't tell me it is beaches, dont tell me it is culture, and dont tell me it is cuisine - Most of them don't get a rat's a** about it :)

One word - CHEAP.

There are packaged tours touted, marketed and sold in UK, Russia, and a few other European and countries of the FSU. Charters fly in just like they do to Sharam-el-Sheik.  Both countries have nasty lousy dreary winter, and seasonal workers and other groups feel it is cheaper to be in Goa than in other sun-n-sea destinations.

The drunk russians in goa, drunk brits in the former british carribean colonies where virgin vacations or  monarch flies :D Outcome is the same - mediocre food served to already sloshed vacationers..

Paul, Welcome to gourmetindia - the last word on all things edible in India, and more.

Hi, I'm Dave.  I live in the suburbs of Washington DC and I have been cooking Indian food for myself, my wife and anyone else i can entice to sit down for a meal for about three years.

I started as a way to improve my diet and loose weight by reducing the amount of meat that I eat.  My strategy was to keep the satisfaction factor high in vegetable-based meals by amping up the amount and complexity of flavor.  Indian cooking was a natural fit.

I adopted a "less-meatatarian" style of eating and have lost about 110 lbs. I decided that a modest home-preapared meal of dal, chawal, subzi were the best balanced and most satisfying, so I have been making and taking this to work daily for the last few years.

The consequence of this is that I hardly let a day go by with something Indian and homemade to eat.  Also, I have become passionate (I really hate that word, but it fits here) about learning more about regional Indian dishes and the culture which is expressed through the food.

So, I hope the members of this forum will bear with an enthusiastic newbie and let me sit in on some of the discussions.

Hi Foodies !!!

My name is Prateek Hira from Lucknow (If you all I call it a historic cuisine capital of India). By profession I am a tour operator and due to my love for cuisine I also operate an experiential dining facility, where food lovers learn to cook, cook themselves under supervision and eat as well. - Sort of having your cake and eating it as well. I just joined this forum yesterday though I will take time to understand, how it works as I call myself tech-NO-LOGICAL, because I just can not understand how tech works logically.

Cheers !!!

Prateek

HI, I'm Jeanne, and I live in Salem, OR, in the US.  I love to eat Indian food, and I've only started cooking it in about the last couple of years.

My major interest right now is in the culinary history of Goa, specifically the 16th century.  Any help in that area would be gratefully appreciated; I have sent lots of email and letters to historians and culinary programs at universities in India, and have yet to get a response.

Chetan:

I belong to an historical re-creation group that stops at the start of the 17th century; I'm interested in Goa from the standpoint of how Portuguese foodways interwove with the foodways of the Konkani-speaking peoples and Hindu population present when the colony began.

Hello and namaste,

I became vegetarian a few years ago and, since I loved to cook already, knew that Indian food has a long history of flavorful vegetarian food, some simple, some more complex. In time I've come to love food that comes from the South of India. The Indian's here in California are always amazed to see this white guy enjoying some nice rasam and dosa without breaking a sweat tongue.png

It's great to have found this community and hope to be learning more about different ingredients, history, and methods of food preparation from all over India.
